What is the difference between a Trekker and a Trekkie?

Have you ever heard someone correct their friends when referred to as a "Trekkie"? Some die-hard fans consider the term to be almost derogatory. So how can you avoid having Star Trek Fans setting their limited edition phasers on stun?

The trekkie vs. trekker debate is one that can't even be settled by Star Trek creator, Gene Roddenbury himself. Once at a Star Trek convention Mr. Roddenberry used the word "trekkie" and a fan stood up and yelled "Its' Trekker. Dispite this fan's obvious emotional attachment to the term, Gene responded that he, as the creator, should know.

However, Gene has been quoted in interview referring to them as both and even once said that neither was correct.

Part of the reason many resent the term Trekkie is because of the negative stygma which is now attached to it because of pop culture. Trekkers claim that unlike the obsessive trekkie, they have lives.
